Elstead Sunday CC play the best game of their year and see sacrifice for the cause

As the majority of the Sunday's turned up rather tardily from a late night camping and celebrating our wicket keepers wife's 50th birthday ( he's only 30, we don't talk about it) the overall look was of an indigestion advert!

Waverley turned up for an early beer and as the sun shone on our beautiful ground (congrats to the team responsible for the quality of the wicket, completely lost on us I'm afraid) Elstead won the toss.

Special guest star Tom Lincoln opened the bowling opposite his nemesis Barry "flipper" young who stuffed him on tour, and once again I'm afraid Tom "choker" lincoln didn't disappoint.

As drinks came and went, Elstead looked hungover. It took Bartlett & Stevenson to get rid of the annoyingly good opening pair and from that point Elstead managed to get the Run rate back under control with some snappy help from Devitt & Lee.

Talking of Devitt, he and P.Lincoln opened the batting for Elsteads reply and in some style. Tim D knocked the ball outta the ground first over whilst his colleague sweated and complained about being tired. Whilst Devitt managed to get himself out at 49 to an absolutely stunning catch on the boundary, mr "tired" went on to get his fifty which of course he dedicated to his much older wife.  As batting went, Stevenson, Bartlett, Lee & Young saw the team home but we must pause to pay homage to Mr Richard Whilding.

A panther in the outfield, always putting his body on the line for the team, this week he went one step further. A fast, skiddy, bouncing potential four went at him viciously and all he could think to do was to sacrifice what god gave him to define him as a man. As the "oooohhhs" died down from the crowd, he rolled around the outfield without even a whimper (as he couldn't even talk) went white and carried on, making quiet "damaged" sounds as he walked in.

Three hours later, ghostly white he emerged to bat once again to go for the glory and whilst being run out, took 8 inches (not the first time) of skin off his arm as he dived into the crease. Wild thing, we salute you.

We won, beers were had, we enjoy playing Waverley because they play Sundays as they should  be played, nuff said.
