Brave young cricketers take to the field for their first ever match

Elstead U9's put up a brave, but ultimately unsuccessful, run chase against the older more experience Farncombe U9's in Elsteads' first match of the season and for the players (and coaches) their cricketing careers! Pandemic, weather and an over running football season may have robbed the young gladiators of practice but it couldn't dampen their enthusiasm as they gathered for the toss.

Captain Rosie won and put Farncombe in to bat. It was Nathan who took the teams first wicket with just his 4th ball. A solid bowling performance and alert fielding restricted the hard hitting Farncombe team to 309 for 1 at the end of their innings. A rousing team talk from coaches Cliff and Jason clearly did the trick as 4's where smashed to all parts of the ground by Nicolas, Freddy, Ethan and Toby. Anna and Freddy secured Elstead's first bouns point, winning their pairs battle, but some tight bowling in the middle overs meant that, despite a master class of running between the wickets by Alec and Toby, Elstead fell short of their target. The travelling barmy army of parents gave the team a well deserved standing ovation at the end of the match.

So onwards and upwards for the team, no game this week means there will be plenty of time for the finer details of the game to be honed before they take to the road again to play Wonersh & Shamley Green on Sunday 23rd May
