Not to be

Despite an evening in the sunshine, the sun did not shine on our team performance. It was cup time and our second-round match against Chiddingfold Rockets. Nathan won the toss and put the Rockets into bat. Rufus (1/16 in 2) continued to bowl with pace, while Danny (1/15 in 3) kept the spin going. The two were the only two able to pick up wickets against this strong Chiddingfold team. There was some good fielding, made more satisfying with long barriers rather than feet, led by Jake as he saved a few boundaries by putting his body on the line. Eddie took some time to get going behind the stumps but grew into the role over the night. Chrissie (0/12 in 2) and Nathan (0/22 in 3) were tidy with the ball, not conceding any no-balls or wides. While Ben, Nate and Jude played well in their debut for the U11s.
Chiddingfold had 3 batters who made the max 25 runs in the teams total 163/2, a tough target to chase.
Chiddingfold’s opening bowler paced in to deliver consistent fast balls making the start of Elstead’s innings tough. Eddie (2), Rufus (7) and Danny (16) succumbed to good bowling. Just as Danny and Nathan (7) were getting going and building a partnership, a mix up for a run led to Nathan heading back to the pavilion. Jack (4) came in and hit a glorious four down the ground off the first ball he faced, however the bowler had the last laugh a few balls later. At 58/5 and only 8.4 overs down, I started to think I would be home early. However, Fin (4), Chrissie (1), Jude (1), Nate (4 not out) and Jake (0 not out) had other plans and managed to take us through to the 20 overs. No ton this week, many more wickets lost but a respectable 86 runs for Elstead.
