No early jubilance for the U11s

A glorious sunny Wednesday evening (Jubilee organisers are praying for this sun over the next few days) greeted the U11s as they took on Blackheath. Elstead had Isabelle (debut), Archie and Will (first matches this year) and a loan from the U9s in the form of Nicholas, along with some more seasoned players in Danny, Nathan, George and of course Chrissie.
Danny led the team this evening, as the coach was pre-occupied on a work call, lost the toss and was put into bat. Overall there was a good batting display by the team, although the scoring was slower than has been over the last few games as Elstead progressed to a gross score of 87/5 (262 in pair cricket terms). Danny (14) and Will (5) got the scoreboard rolling with some quick running between the wickets. With the outfield slow following the rain over the last few days, boundaries proved difficult tonight. Chrissie (3) and Isabelle (1) were next in and were challenged with some good bowling and great fielding. Nathan (9) and Nicholas (7) followed with some beautiful straight bat strokes and a lucky edge by Nicholas that raced for 4. Lastly was the big hitting George (7) and Archie (5) who used brute force to crack some fours down the ground in some aggressive batting.
A low target meant some tight bowling and sharp fielding was required, which the team delivered on but it was not quite enough. Danny (0/15) opened the bowling after setting his field and turned the ball to the amazement of the umpires. Will (1/5) was the most economical bowler of the night. He could have had 2 wickets, but the first opportunity just eluded his hands. However, a ball or two later he had his man caught and bowled. Chrissie (0/15), Archie (0/12) and Nicholas (0/15) all bowled 2 good overs during the night. Nathan (0/12), who kept well for the first 8 overs, was expensive in his first over but pulled it back in the last over of the night, where an LBW appeal was turned down and he narrowly missed a caught and bowled while flying through the air. However, the star bowler of the night was George with his 2/14. In the field the team all put in a great effort and the chances missed were not from a lack of trying but rather would have been catches of the year material.
Blackheath made a strong 102/4 (282 in pairs cricket terms) to take the match.
It was a great evening that was evenly matched and played by mature U11s who were very respectful of the Umpires decisions
