Youth Managers Overview

The 2009 season had mixed results with importantly some success for all teams. The team managers, coaches and helpers have all ensured that the boys were able to play and achieve to their full potential. With the total of boys, sadly no girls this year, across the youth groups increased from last year, it has required  a significant amount of effort and organisation from all involved to achieve the results we have.

The U9 section has continued to grow from last year with the turn out increasing each week for their Saturday morning training. However, to ensure this continues next year we will need enthusiastic parents to come forward and in particular we will need a dedicated manager for the U9’s to maintain this progress.

All the other teams have had varying degrees of success, with all the match details given below in this leaflet. The managers this season were Steve Szczepanski and Jerome Leonard for the U11s,  Bernard Kiddier for the U13s and  Karen Terry for the U15s. We must pay tribute to Karen for her continued management of the U15s during the difficult time for her family and we wish her husband, Bob, a full recovery. This was the last season that Karen will manage the team and next year this will pass to Bernard Kiddier.  Also next season the U11’s will be managed by Jerome Leonard and the U13’s by Steve Szczepanski.

Once again, there are a number of people who need to be mentioned for their help and enthusiasm through the season. Jo Rose for the management of the paper work and administration and for Helen Szczepanski for taking over the Admin towards the end of the season.  Pat Murphy and Anthony Ainslie for preparing match pitches, Josh Berry, Sam Egan and Oli Phillips for umpiring, Bevan Heslop for helping run the U9s, Julian Phillips for his enthusiastic help with coaching and umpiring the U13s. Finally Dave Cooper for his seemingly tireless work helping, and coaching all the teams.

In the end, as ever, it is all about the boys enjoying cricket and becoming better players and we believe that this year we have achieved this aim.

Development - Dave Cooper

The managers have done another great job again this year their enthusiasm and commitment are something of which the club can be proud.  This year Karen Terry retires as U15 Manager, and I speak for everyone in thanking her for the work she has done.

The managers have produced another fine group of players and it is great to see so many of them become members of the senior teams.

U9 - Jerome Leonard

This has been another encouraging year for the U9’s group.  Even with just an hours training a week, it has been rewarding to see the progress in technique and all their enthusiasm for the game of cricket. All the children have worked hard to develop their skills that will be invaluable for those moving up to the U11 next year.

There was an opportunity for some for the boys to play in a friendly match against Dunsfold. Dunsfold proved to be a stronger side but gave valuable experience for the boys that will only go to help them improve. It was unfortunate that we were unable to fit in another match before the end of the season. but this is an area that we will hope to improve on next year. To this end we are currently reviewing the possibility of running an U9 quick cricket tournament at Elstead, which is something we have done in the past and proved to be very successful.

We would like to thank David Cooper and Bevan Heslop for their support in coaching and Anthony Ainslie for preparing the strip and providing drinks each week

U11 - Steve Szczepanski

What was to become one of our most challenging seasons in years saw Elstead drawn against the towns of Surrey, including facing a double header against the mighty Guildford, matches against Farnham, Chobham and travelling as far afield as Alton and Valley End (nr. Bagshot).

After a slow start to the season, with us struggling on numbers, our squad eventually swelled to 21 players, a testament to how popular cricket has become in the village, the lads all playing a role in 11 matches over a 15 week period.  The majority of the season has witnessed our squad enduring a master class in cricket handed out by the likes of Guildford and Farnham, close games against Chobham, Valley End and Grayswood that all went to the last over, and our sole victory this season against Bourne. With only 7 full age U11’s available, our young squad has played enthusiastically all season, with a good turnout at training week in week out. A quick mention goes to the Holland brothers – Samuel, aged 6 who carried his bat against Chobham when we could only muster 10 players early in the season (playing 5 years above his level!), and to Max who was selected to play for District at U9’s level. Well done!

Special thanks go to Patrick Cole and Ollie Millward for Umpiring, Pat and Anthony for pitch preparation, Helen and Kim for support on teas and setting up, but most of all to Jerome for his commitment all season, in the capacity as coach and umpire.

Next season holds much promise, with a complete ‘full age’ first team and some talented youngsters following up from behind.

U13 - Bernard Kiddier

The U13’s worked hard this season and the all round level of cricket was rewarding to watch. Although they only won 3 out of 9 matches played, for each match they were a credit to the club and to themselves with a total of 819 runs scored and 40 wickets taken and particularly this year the fielding was to a high level.

Not always having a full eleven of U13 players available on the day in our squad, we have had to rely on boys from the U11s to make up and therefore to all those how played a big thank you.

My gratitude goes to Dave Cooper for his coaching guidance and enthusiasm throughout the weeks and months. Also to Julian for his coaching and umpiring and to Pat and Anthony for preparing the wickets and Anthony for organising the drinks.

As I said in last years summary there was once again great team spirit through out which has made managing and watching them a privilege.

U15 - Karen Terry

The under 15s have had a good year. They have played 7 games with 4 great wins. The overall effort, attitude, commitment and skill have been outstanding. Everybody has played their part, from the U13’s, Alex Kiddier, Josh Heslop, Daniel Millis and Gareth Bevan, to our talented wicket keeper Ryan Millis. Sadly he got injured but Oli Phillips confidently took up the challenge.
