Elstead Sunday X1 v Hydefarmers X1 5th June 2016

Match report kindly written by Matt Longman

After our last opponents cancelled as they were scared of what they might face, the Elstead Sunday team were keen to get back in the saddle and show what they could do.

On an all too infrequent sunny afternoon, Elstead took to the field against Hyde Farmers without any front line bowlers and it showed as the opposition got off to a flying start. Some fittingly agricultural shots from the farmers quickly took them to 64 before (Disco) Munden struck for the first wicket. A devastating spell of 3-12 from Lee evened matters and some high end pie launching, including a maiden from Little, made things interesting. Birdy bowled 2 clean overs back after 20 year lay off now keen to play more and not just coach. Tight spells from Carter, Munden and Fishburn kept the score down until their mid-order ringers accelerated the Farmers to 225 from 40 overs.

Some careless batting reduced the hosts to 40-5, despite a fine 9 from Little in his hastily constructed jockstrap. Thomas (49) and (Tc) Carter (74) caught brilliantly by skipper Devitt, gave the home crowd reason to cheer with a genuinely classy 108 for the 6th wicket and suddenly a victory looked possible. Birdy came in at 11 to the rymans music aptly playing "A little bit of this and a little bit of that, la la la la" Sadly, the tail end couldn't quite bring things home and Elstead were dismissed for 178.
