U13s match report

Cricket was the winner
- Peter Lincoln
After an assured victory earlier in the week, Elstead’s U13s took on Grayswood in confident mood. Another glorious sunny evening saw Elstead bat first and they got off to a quick start with Joe L, Ollie L and Alex D all keeping the run rate at 9 runs per over. Alfie and Luke settled in and kept the runs ticking along nicely, which left Louis S to come in and bash 21 off 12 balls and take Elstead’s total to 136.
If Elstead could bowl tightly like they did in the last match, it would be a tall order for Grayswood to chase down. However, it didn’t quite go to plan, with some very wayward bowling resulting in some long overs. By the end, the umpires were complaining of aching arms with all the wide and no-ball signals.
However, Elstead’s fielding was much improved. Alex D kept wicket brilliantly and Spike P took 3 great catches. We’ll ignore the fact that 2 of them were from above waist height no-balls!
Grayswood needed 27 runs from their final 5 overs and with their run rate at nearly 8 an over, it seemed likely they would make it. Elstead needed to finish strongly and brought on the pace of Joe L and the guile and accuracy of Luke S’s leg spin. Both took wickets and kept the run rate down, leaving Grayswood to get 17 off the final over. It would prove to be too much.
It was fantastic match, at a beautiful location, played in great spirit by two well matched teams. Cricket was the winner!
