Elstead Fight Clear of the Relegation Zone

It was an important match in the rain and drizzle last saturday as a loss would leave Elstead in a precarious position in the remaining 2 matches of the season.
Having lost the toss we were put into bat. The skippers decision to keep Smeag as opening bat was amply repaid with Sam putting in a great shift as he and Max built an opening partnership of over 100 in the first 25 overs, before Smeag was caught on 56. This foundation set up the rest of the innings as Guy and Max pushed on. Max was caught for 48 and Guy was supported with cameos from DT and Cheese before being caught for 43. A final quickfire 14 from Giles in the closing few overs gave us 209 to defend.
Witley put on a spirited start to the run chase keeping up or ahead of the rate for nearly 20 overs, despite some excellent bowling from Deights, and helped by DT and Max. Deights finished with 2 for 26 from 9 overs. It became clear that Witley did not bat deep as their captain endeavored to keep strike whilst his remaining batsmen came and went around him, eventually succumbing to Guy for 43. Once again Pat proved that taking the pace off and bowling at the bloody stumps was what you should do as he scooped 3 for 28 from 9. A couple of bizarre run outs took out the last two batsmen and sealed the victory by 60 runs.
A good natured game against a friendly opposition - a great day's cricket.
